Hyper-V: Could not be started because the hypervisor is not running

When you start a virtual machine, you get the following error:

Virtual machine “xxxxx could not be started because the hypervisor is not running”

hypervisor-not-started1

This is a common issue because Hyper-V requires:

  • a SLAT-capable CPU
  • To enable virtualization parameter into the Bios settings
  • To enable DEP

Data Execution Prevention (DEP) is a system-level memory protection feature that is built into the operating system.

To enable DEP, go to “Performance” settings:

hypervisor-not-started2

and select “Turn on DEP for all programs and services

hypervisor-not-started3

Don’t forget to restart and try again to start your virtual machine.
