Windows Server 2016: Remote Desktop Licensing mode is not configured

When upgrading your Remote Desktop Session Host to Windows Server 2016, you may get the following warning even if your RD Licensing Server is activated:

Remote Desktop Licensing mode is not configured. Use Server Manager to specify the Remote Dekstop Licensing Server.

If you are using a Windows 2012 R2 Server RD licensing Server then you must also upgrade the license server. A Windows Server 2012 R2 RDS license server can only host CALs licenses up to Windows Server 2012 R2.

Any RDS license server can host licenses from all previous versions of Remote Desktop Services and the current version of Remote Desktop Services. Windows Server 2016 RDS license server can host CALs licenses from all previous versions of RDS, down to Windows Server 2003.

The following table shows the CALs that are compatible on RD Licensing Server.
