Guest Access Disabled by Default in Windows 10 Fall Creators Update

After updating your machine to Windows 10 Fall Creators Update, you may get the following error message:

You can’t access this shared folder because your organization’s security policies block unauthenticated guest access. These policies help protect your PC from unsafe or malicious devices on the network.

In Windows 10 Fall Creators Update and Windows Server version 1709, the SMB2 client no longer allows guest account access to a remote server.

Why?

This change in default behavior is by design and is recommended by Microsoft for security.

How to fix?

In order to solve this issue, you must enable insecure guest logons through GPO or local policy.

  • Computer configuration\
  • administrative templates\
  • network\
  • Lanman Workstation
“Enable insecure guest logons”

You don’t need to restart your session, the network share will be available immediately.
